Simplicity is the basis for improvements in ambulance care

Diviation reports drive improvement efforts at PreMedic

At PreMedic, reported deviations are used continuously in the improvement work, improvements that can be life-changing.

The Challenge of Joint Processes

When PreMedic got the chance to build their own anomaly management system, they chose one they recognized, but made it much easier. We don't need a large-scale system, so we removed what was unnecessary and had our staff start reporting anomalies,” says Thomas Oredsson, Operations Manager in Kristianstad and Broby.
When Premedic signed a contract to become a private operator, access to public health IT systems, including anomaly management, disappeared.
We were back to paper and pen, Word and binders for our reporting. It wasn't sustainable in the long run,” Thomas says.

Simplicity made more people start reporting

They compared different systems and chose one the staff recognised from public care. In order to lower the reporting threshold, they together with Munkeby made reporting easier and more efficient, which produced results.
From having zero deviations a few years ago, we have 100 a year,” Thomas says.

Reporting via mobile or tablet

By mobile or tablet, staff report deviations and are sent to a coordinator. After that, the coordinator can easily complete and follow up on the discrepancy, communicate with the rapporteur and share it with others within the organization.

Easy to take feedback from patients and relatives

PreMedic also uses MedControl to provide patients and relatives with the ability to comment via the web. In addition, Thomas always contacts the person who has submitted comments for a conversation about what has happened. — Not everyone agrees with our staff about the care they need.In MedControl, PreMedic classifies and compiles all anomalies. Information that contributes to the improvement work and forms the basis for the annual certification. — We can see in which areas we have deviations and thus create a better basis for our training efforts.

Collaboration contributes to more improvements

Thomas has regular meetings with Munkeby about how the system can be developed to contribute to more improvements within PreMedic. One feature that is appreciated is to be able to report occupational injuries and incidents directly to the Swedish Work Environment Authority, also to integrate with more external actors. “Being able to report everything in one place and not having to send papers to each other would make it a lot easier.
